OLATHE — Duane Markle Ruland, age 66, of Olathe, Colo., passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 28, 2009, at the Montrose Memorial Hospital. Duane was born Dec. 5, 1942 to Charles Markle and Imogene Faith (Mathews) Ruland in Alamosa, Colo. He spent his childhood in Crested Butte and Olathe, graduating from Olathe High School in 1960. Following high school, he attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Duane married Cathy Shipley on April 7, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nev. Cathy preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. Duane was previously married to Loraine Rasmussen. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Black Canyon Old Farts Motorcycle Club (B.C.O.F.M.C.). Duane enjoyed riding motorcycles, 4-wheeling, his dog ‘Lil Bit,’ watching sports and playing spider solitare. He enjoyed the great outdoors and the mountains. He enjoyed spending time with his mother and family. Duane leaves his imprint on all those he influenced while he fulfilled his special place in this world. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving family members include his mother, Imogene Ruland of Grand Junction, Colo; two sons, Mathew Ruland of Olathe, Colo., Jesse Ruland of Grand Junction, Colo; daughter, Tammy Hurt of Jetmore, Kan; one sister, Charla Riggs of Grand Junction, Colo; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Duane was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy; father, Charles Markle Ruland; and one brother, Grant Enos Ruland.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel. Cremation will follow the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home and Crematory, 802 E. Main, Montnrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.
