Duane Howard Cunningham was born Oct. 19, 1942 in Bismarck, N.D. to parents, Howard and Elma (Barta) Cunningham. Duane spent his childhood in Jamestown, N.D. and Montrose, Colo., graduating from Montrose High School. Following high school, he attended Mesa Junior College in Grand Junction and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He graduated with a degree in business, vocational rehabilitation and a specialist degree in Education.

He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Lorimor, on Aug. 28, 1965 at the Lady of Fatima in Lakewood, Colo. To their union were born two children, Brad and Jessica.

Duane was a member of the Clan Cunningham (Scottish Heritage Club), member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Lions Club and the Elks Club. Duane loved spending time with his family, camping, old cars, playing tennis and loved researching family genealogy and Scottish heritage.

Duane was a loving man who was always quietly trying to do the right thing. Duane loved camping and hiking with his family. He always lead the way on hikes, would disappear around the bend but would always be waiting for us. He’s gone ahead again, but we know he will be waiting for us around the bend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Shirley Ann Cunningham of Montrose, Colo.; his children, Brad Cunningham and wife Nik Cunningham of Anchorage, Alaska, Jessica Griffin and husband Al Griffin of Montrose, Colo.; three grandchildren, Terry Cunningham, William Griffin, Blake Griffin; and his brother, Vern Cunningham and wife Addie Cunningham of Estes Park, Colo.

Memorial contributions can be made to the NuVista Federal Credit Union, in the name of Duane Cunningham, 2711 Commercial Way, Montrose, CO 81401. A scholarship fund has been established to benefit a Montrose High School student athlete.

A celebration of Duane’s life will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2009 at Sunset Mesa Funeral Director's Chapel.
