The commissioners unanimously appointed James Whitticom, William Bennett and Dr. Louis Winkler to the hospital board. Whitticom and Bennett will serve five-year terms. Winkler was appointed to fill Greg Major’s term, which expires in 2011.
Whitticom holds a bachelor of pharmacy degree. He is retired and was most recently the vice president of General Merchandise, Health and Beauty Care and Pharmacy with the Safeway Corporation in California.

Winkler is a retired physician licensed to practice medicine by the State of Colorado. He practiced orthopedics and orthopedic surgery in Montrose from 1975 to 2007. During that time, he served on many MMH committees and continues to attend a weekly orthopedic clinic as a volunteer. He is a member of the Hospital Ethics Committee and member of the Physician Recruitment and Retention Advisory Committee, along with helping coordinate the Mission Clinic on Mondays.
The new trustees will take their oath of office at 7:30 a.m. April 8 at the hospital. Following that, there will be a discussion and planning session for trustees’ in-service education, which is done by hospital administration and the board of trustees. That training is supplemented by QHR, the hospital’s management firm, which has its own ongoing training for board members.
The next regular hospital board meeting is April 27 at 5 p.m. at MMH.
County commissioners also meet with the board of trustees on a quarterly bases to discuss the hospital’s happenings. The next meeting is May 21 at 5 p.m. at MMH.
