Vernice Elaine Cox Vernice Elaine Cox Aug. 20, 1929 — April 7, 2009 MONTROSE — Vernice Elaine Cox, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Montrose Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. Vernice was born Aug. 20, 1929 to George Franklin and Stella Mae Carlock in Trenton, Neb. She married Victor Cox of Wray, Colo. Both were living in Montrose, Colo. at the time of their marriage which was in Aztec, N.M. on July 11, 1947. Their first child, Elaine, was born in Montrose, Colo. and shortly after her birth, they moved to Sterling, Colo. where they had another daughter, Crystall, and a son, Steve. In 1960, they moved to Nebraska to try their hand at farming and in 1965 they moved back to Montrose where she lived until the time of her passing. In life, Vernice loved spending time with her family, big family dinners and family card games. She also enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her flowers and listening to her wind chimes on the porch. Vernice loved going camping and fishing with all her children and grandchildren as much as it was possible, she was quite the angler. Some of her quieter hobbies were crocheting, embroidering, doing daily crossword puzzles and helping her husband with quilting. She was a member of the Good Sams Club as well as the VFW Auxiliary. Vernice leaves behind a family that loves her; her loving husband, Victor Cox, her daughter, Elaine Stiles and husband Lin of Montrose, her son, Steve Cox and wife Sandie, as well as her sister, Dolores and her sister-in-law, Naomi Carlock. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren: Allen Stiles and wife Cheryl of Montrose; Barry Stiles and wife Chrissy of Montrose; Shelly Fling and husband Kevin of Houston, Texas; Karen Mullin and husband John of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ryan Raimer of Montrose, Colo.; Danny Cox and wife Amber of Durango, Colo.; Joey Alkire and wife Anna of Branson, Mo.; James Westergren and wife Ashley of Hotchkiss; Jean McLaughlin and husband Steve of Montrose; Jan Humphrey and husband Chad of Montrose, and John Westergren of Lakewood, Colo.; Brandon Blackburn and wife Ashley of Lebanon, Ky., as well as her 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in her passing by her parents, and her siblings; brothers Glen, Ralph, Robert and Thomas Carlock and her sisters Helen Carlock, Velma Blecha and Dorothy Goodell as well as her daughter, Crystall Raimer. A memorial service will be held for Vernice at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. A viewing will be conducted the preceding day, Friday, April 10, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121. She will then be laid to rest alongside her daughter in the Grand View Cemetery.
