Louise Hawkins MONTROSE — Louise Hawkins, age 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday evening, April 19, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family. Louise Hunt Hawkins was born on Aug. 7, 1929 in Sturgis, Miss. to parents Herman Lee and Stella Hunt. She spent her childhood in Mississippi with her nine brothers and sisters. Louise graduated from Sturgis High School at the young age of 16 in 1946. She attended Mississippi College in Clinton, graduating with her teaching license. Later she attended Mississippi State University, receiving her Master’s Degree in education. Louise started her 43-year teaching career at West Point, Miss. in 1951. In 1960, when she moved to Montrose, she began her career for Montrose County School District at the old Johnson Elementary on Main Street. She began teaching at Pomona Elementary School the year it was opened. She concluded her career at Pomona where she had enjoyed years of laughter and special friends. Louise was a member of Christ’s Church of the Valley in Montrose. She will be lovingly remembered for her love of the Lord, Jesus Christ, her Southern cooking and laughter. Louise loved gardening, cards, reading and especially adored her precious grandchildren. Louise married Leslie E. Hawkins on June 12, 1955 in Jackson, Miss.; the marriage ended in divorce in 1981. She made Montrose her home for the last 49 years. She is survived by her loving children, Lois (Ronald) Borden of Montrose, Colo. and Leslie (Jim) Brown of Brea, Calif.; grandchildren, Hannah (Rafael) Mondragon, Leah Borden, Andy Brown and Jared Brown; great-grandsons, Adan Mondragon and Estevan Mondragon. Even though Louise lived most of her life in Montrose, her heart remained in the South. She loved her southern home and extended family. She is survived by three siblings: her sisters, Mavis Hunt Posey and Francis Hunt Duncan and one brother, Herman Lee Hunt, all of Mississippi. Waiting for her with the Lord: her parents; three brothers, Allan Hunt, Rufus Hunt, Muldrew Hunt; and three sisters, Lois Hunt Allred, Irene Hunt Scott, and Lucille Hunt Scott. A memorial service will be held Friday morning, April 24, 2009, at 10 a.m., at Calvary Chapel in Montrose. Interment will take place with a private family service.
