Richard L. (Dick) Thompson, age 94, of Montrose, died on May 8, 2009, in his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Ruth Thompson, and six children: Joyce Trumbo (Larry) of Oklahoma, Lyle Thompson of Colorado, Richard Thompson (Laramie) of Missouri, Lee Thompson (Chan) of North Carolina, Becky Wilcox (Jack) of New Mexico, and Barbara Gould (Michael) of Minnesota. In addition, Dick is survived by twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and his brother Joe Thompson (Mary Ann). He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elizabeth Thompson, seven brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter.

Dick was a gifted athlete. He enjoyed bowling and was recently honored with the 2008-2009 Outstanding Senior Bowler Award. In prior years, he received multiple gold medals in a variety of Senior Olympics events. Dick was a legend among his neighbors for his twice-daily speed walks. He was renowned for his green thumb and shared the products of his work – beautiful African violets and other plants – with friends and neighbors. He also took pleasure in playing cards with his wife and friends.
Dick will be remembered for his sharp mind, his firm handshake, his incredible work ethic, and his love for his family.
A memorial service celebrating Dick’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 11, at Zion Lutheran Church, 701 S. Junction Ave., Montrose.
