Dam releases water to cleanse Gunnison River.

Visitors with the Bureau of Reclamation watch as nearly 3,000 cubic feet of water flow per second over the Crystal Dam at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park Wednesday morning. With water being released from the bottom of the dam, the total number of CFS was 7,500. The annual controlled release of the water was planned to help restore the natural habitat of the Gunnison River by clearing out sediment. The release is the first in a 36-year battle with the National Park Service to grant an annual spring discharge. The public is invited to visit and take photographs this Friday and Saturday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. both days; a $15 fee per car will be necessary to access the dam through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
