Jones tied for 51st at state

COLORADO SPRINGS — Montrose High’s lone state golf qualifier Darby Jones shot a 101 and finished the opening round of the Class 4A championship at Patty Jewett Golf Course tied for 51st.

Jones shot 27-over par on the course and was tied with four others. She is set to tee off again at 9:51 a.m. today in the final round of the tournament.

Emily Wood of Salida leads the field with a 1-over 75. One stroke behind Wood is Christina Spinzig of Evergreen.

Others hoping to challenge are third-place Lindsay McGetrick of Valor Christian (81), and Regis’ Kathleen Kershisnik and Evergreen’s Chance Forbes, who are tied for fourth with 82s.

In the team competition, Wood’s score helped Salida to a slim 259-262 lead over Rock Canyon. Broomfield (267), Kent Denver (268) and Cheyenne Mountain (269) are clumped together a few strokes back.

The individual leaders’ group tees off at 10:27 a.m. Tuesday.
