MONTROSE —After a disappointing loss to Mullen in the Class 4A state semifinals in March, the Montrose High Lady Indians basketball squad returned to the court with a fresh start.

Monday through Wednesday morning this week, the Montrose girls coaching staff and players hosted a summer camp for 30 incoming fourth- through eighth-grade in the Lloyd McMillan gym

“The kids are just great,” MHS girls basketball coach Eric Sanchez said. “This is really a great way for them to connect with Montrose basketball. Our girls are enjoying it and the kids gain friends on the team they can root for when next season comes around.”

Sanchez said the goal of the camp was to teach the young athletes the fundamentals of the game. The camp offered placed emphasis on learning good footwork on the court. Sanchez said players often don’t think as much about their feet in a game as they do their hands.

While the goal was to make all of the campers better basketball players, Sanchez said he wanted everyone to have a fun experience while they learned and hoped he would see them all in the future.

“In the future, these are going to be the girls trying out for Montrose girls basketball,” Sanchez said. “These kids have been little sponges — really focusing and learning what their teaching them. I hope they walk away with not only some new friends, but an overall positive experience.”
