Montrose Express to provide taxi service to area

MONTROSE  — Montrose taxi service is being shuffled around once more.

All Points Transit announced Tuesday it was withdrawing its application to provide taxi services in Montrose. That’s because one Montrose company is already set up and ready to provide the service, the transit board’s president said.

“The reason we were considering starting a taxi is that we believe that Montrose needs safe reliable taxis,” Peter Crowell said. “When we found out Telluride Express was also interested ... why should we duke it out? It is a lot more trouble for us.”

The Public Utilities Commission reviewed Co West Transportation’s application Wednesday to provide a taxi service in Montrose. Co West Transportation is the umbrella company for Telluride Express, Wild West Tours, and now, Montrose Express.

Sue Rovito, Co West general manager, said there is still more paperwork and it will be about a month before everything is approved. However, the company is providing service in Montrose now under its current “call and demand” permit.

For Montrose Express, Rovito said she still needs to talk with local restaurant and bar owners before announcing taxi hours. Fees are also being determined. But people needing a ride can still call Montrose Express at 240-0813.
