Mountain states to see more travel for holiday weekend

MONTROSE — The mountain region, including Colorado, is the only region that will see travel growth over the July 4 weekend, according to a recent study conducted by AAA.

“What we’ve been seeing is that Colorado travel is fairly strong this year,” said Wave Dreher, AAA Colorado spokesperson.

The study, conducted for every major holiday, looks at nine different U.S. regions and estimates the number of people traveling 50 miles or more away from home.

In the mountain states — Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming — 2.6 million people that account for 11.8 percent of the region’s population will travel during the holiday weekend, which represents a 1.2 percent increase from last year.

Nationwide, 37.1 million people will travel, down 1.9 percent from last year.

Dreher attributes the increase in mountain-state travel to a couple main factors.
