DENVER — Efforts to enhance lynx population in the state have borne fruit — 10 kittens, to be exact.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife found the kittens during its annual spring lynx survey, in five dens in the eastern San Juan Mountains and in Gunnison and Eagle counties.

The shy, relatively small wildcats are a federally threatened species and in Colorado are considered a species of concern. The DOW has been working since 1999 to re-establish lynx in the state, reintroducing 218 so far, and tracking them with radio collars.

The 10 kittens discovered are the first documented since 2006.

The existence of kittens demonstrates the lynx are expanding their range and surviving long enough to reproduce — good signs, the DOW says.
