OLATHE — Enough with the red tape.

Frustrated with restrictions on federal farm-dorm housing, Tuxedo Corn owner John Harold is finishing construction on private housing for his field workers, who will soon be harvesting the world-famous Olathe Sweet-brand sweet corn.

“We were never going to solve the housing problem they have with the dorm. I had no choice (but to build) because of the amount of labor that I need,” he said.

Harold has been considering creating more onsite housing on his property for some time, first announcing his intentions in March, when he acquired former classroom buildings and began remodeling them to meet Farm Labor Housing Standards.

Thursday, he said the housing is nearly complete and that he expects to begin utilizing it around July 9 or 10.

Corn harvest was anticipated within the next 19 or so days.
