Colorful quilts to flood Pavilion By Mallory GeorgeDaily Press Writer MONTROSE — The Montrose Pavilion will see a rainbow of colorful designs and patterns as the 14th Annual Black Canyon Quilt Show comes to town July 10-12. The show, themed "A Quilter's Paradise," is expected to have more than 800 attendees, said publicity chair Michelle Courtney. Regional judges will evaluate bed-size quilts, lap quilts, baby quilts, challenge quilts (those pieced and quilted solely by the quilter) and wearable art. Winners will receive prizes. People browsing the ornate quilts may vote for the viewer's choice award. "Personally, I think it's just a lot of fun to get to see all the quilts and meet all the quilters I don't know," said Courtney, who hopes to have two of her quilts on display at the show. Aside from the quilts on display, the show will feature entertainment. The Sweet Adelines will perform Saturday at 2 p.m. Throughout the weekend, a "Bed Turning" of historical quilts will take place, and a story will accompany each quilt. Different skills, such as ribbon embroidery and invisible applique, will be demonstrated at the Pavilion as well. A quilt called "Pastel Parfait" will be raffled off for $1 per ticket, with proceeds going to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado. A silent auction will also benefit Hospice. The Black Canyon Quilt Show is the largest on the Western Slope and will draw attendees from all over the area, including Utah and Arizona. Courtney said the show is so large because it is sponsored by three area guilds: Columbine Quilters, Friendship Quilters of Western Colorado and San Juan Quilters. Quilters and viewers of all ages are welcome to attend, and Courtney said at least five quilters in the show are younger than 16. "It's great for new and old quilters to get together and learn from one another," she said. Admission to the show is $3 for adults and $1 for children under 12. Fees fund the costs associated with using the Pavilion, and any extra money goes toward bringing in quilting teachers for classes throughout the year.
