Montrose man, Texas man die in crash

GUNNISON — A Montrose man died Sunday after his RV collided head-on with a passenger car on Monarch Pass.

The Colorado State Patrol said Ray Stout, 79, triggered a five-car crash on Highway 50 when his 1983 Toyota Dolphin RV strayed across the center line, then swerved back, side-swiping an eastbound Lincoln Town Car, which then side-swiped a Toyota Camry. Both of those vehicles went off the road; their occupants weren’t injured.

The RV then collided head-on with an eastbound Nissan Altima driven by Miguel Solis, 68, of El Paso, Texas. Both Stout and Solis died at the scene.

Solis’ passenger, Felipa Solis, was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. She was listed in fair condition there Monday morning.

A fifth vehicle, a Lexus, was struck by debris from the crash. Its driver escaped injury, but the crash required lengthy investigation and the highway was closed for several hours.
