NUCLA — The four-footed among us have friends on the West End.

Hoof and Paw, a foster-care network for cats, dogs and horses, is going strong thanks to organizers and volunteers.

“It started when one person wanted to help the animals at the local (Naturita) pound,” Hoof and Paw’s secretary and public relations director Shirley Miller said. “She was concerned about unwanted dogs and cats being euthanized.”

Miller said the woman sought help from friends and word spread. Hoof and Paw was born, with Joanne Simoneaux as CEO and foster coordinator; Debbie Freitag, president and adoption coordinator; Carol Childress, vice president; Tonya Stephens, membership coordinator and law enforcement liaison, other consultants, and Miller, who also acts as treasurer.
