MONTROSE — Sgt. David Joseph Kinterknecht, age 41, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Montrose Memorial Hospital from injuries he sustained in the line of duty.

David was born May 23, 1968 in Montrose, Colo., the son of JoAnn (Bess) and Robert Kinterknecht. He attended Montrose public schools graduating from Montrose High School in 1986. He then attended Mesa State College and Delta Montrose Technical College where he completed his training and fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. David worked for the San Miguel and Montrose County Sheriff’s Offices before coming to the Montrose Police Department in 1996. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Montrose Fire Protection District for a total of 10 years.

David married Kathy (McBride) Estrada on Nov. 18, 2000, and they were blessed to have shared eight and a half wonderful years together—-David will live on forever in Kathy’s heart. David loved all of his children, Andrea, Amanda, Jesse, Jason and PJ with all of his heart. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who knew him. He will remain in our hearts forever.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy of Montrose; daughters, Andrea Kinterknecht, 16, and Amanda Kinterknecht, 12, both of Olathe, Colo.; stepsons, Jesse Estrada and wife Nikki of Omaha, Neb., Jason Estrada of Aurora, Colo., and PJ Lopez of Montrose; parents, JoAnn and Don Topliss of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Denise King and husband John of Overton, Nev.; nephews, Douglas and Joshua King and niece, Kaylee King, all of Nevada; and his special uncle, Charlie Bess of Colorado Springs, Colo. David is also survived by the two new loves of his life, his grandchildren, Fabian Estrada and Dixie Dowley.

David was preceded in death by his father, Robert Kinterknecht; and grandparents, Ival and David Bess.

A funeral service in honor and celebration of Sgt. Kinterknecht’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, in the Lloyd McMillan Memorial Gymnasium at Montrose High School. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Valley Lawn Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Cedar Cemetery, east of Montrose with a 21-gun salute, Taps and flag presentation. “Leapin Lena,” the fire department’s vintage fire truck, will carry the casket as a hearse. Bagpipes will be played by The Emerald Society’s Corporal Scott Hughes.

David is a hero and his death has saddened the entire community of Montrose, and at the same time we hold our heads high and have much pride in our officers and the work that they do.
