MONTROSE — The Montrose Downtown Development Authority Steering Committee met with business owners and other locals yesterday to begin laying the groundwork for an entity that is supposed to revitalize the downtown area.

The steering committee was formed after Downtown Colorado, Inc., assessed the downtown Montrose area in February and ultimately recommended the creation of a Downtown Development Authority, a legal entity that creates and implements goals for downtown areas.

"This is a key mechanism to achieve the recommendations of numerous studies," said Bob Brown, the steering committee member who led the meeting.

If a DDA is established, it will have the authority to make capital improvements, spur redevelopment, sponsor events and activities, assist businesses and ensure cleanliness of the area.

Among the ideas for downtown improvement are wider sidewalks, better landscaping, information kiosks and outdoor dining areas.

" Not all people who own the businesses down town own the building too. There are a lot who rent their buildings and it is high rent. It is hard to have low prices when you have to pay rent, the landlords taxes, two types of insurance, etc. Small businesses do not have other stores in another area to help bail them out if they do not make it, such as the chain stores. " They don't need a committee (especially one comprised of themselves, since they are the reason they got into this mess)! Let’s be honest, there are four things that they could change right now to improve business.

    1. Realize that the public does NOT owe them a living.
    2. Treat customers with respect (which will be very tough for some store owners).
    3. Sell something someone wants, not what they think we need.
    4. Sell that something at a fair price.

Done! Your committee can disband now. "

" Downtown Development Authority Steering Committee>Downtown Development Authority>Downtown Proposal Committee>Downtown Action Authority.etc... The same people are on each of these "committees" and their single agenda is to have the 'TAXPAYER" fund the reconstruction of the downtown area, which means tearing out the corners they just rebuilt, removing the trees, making it one lane both ways and adding a value added tax to shop downtown, a taxpayer ripoff in the making.
