DELTA — Larry Dean Cowell of Delta, Colo. passed away on Aug. 1, 2009 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Grand Junction. Larry was born Jan. 20, 1942 at Cedaredge, Colo. to William R. and Hazel E. (Mendenhall) Cowell. His early childhood was spent at McCloud, Calif. Returning to Colorado in 1952, he went to school at Gunnison, Colo. and graduated from Delta High School in 1959.

Larry served his country in the United States Air Force.

He lived in many places: Redding, Calif.; Anchorage, Alaska; Parawan, Utah; Beaufort, S.C. and Sandy Hook, N.J. He worked as a carpenter and carpet layer.

In 1978 he helped his father build Valley Lanes Bowling in Delta where he worked and owned the lanes until his health failed.

Larry is survived by one sister, Darlene Shipley and husband Tom of Olathe; nieces and nephews, Bill and Letha Shipley, Darla Shipley of Olathe, Letitia and Brandon Barber of Montrose, Preston and Amber Shipley of Austin, Texas, Kalisha Shipley of Tennessee, Zane and Willow Shipley of Olathe, Madaline and Colton of Tyler, Texas, Jacob, Lukus and Warrick Barber of Montrose; many cousins also survive.

He had many friends in the bowling field.

He will be missed. Larry chose to be cremated, which has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Valley Lanes Youth Bowling Association, 7530 Hwy. 65, Delta, CO 81416. A Celebration of Life, in honor of Larry Cowell, will be held Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Valley Lanes in Delta.
