MONTROSE — Louie A. Maestaz, age 94, passed away on Aug. 12, 2009, at his home in Montrose. Louie was born March 27, 1915 to Frank and Lorencita Maestaz in Alcalde, N.M. He spent his childhood and received his education in the Montrose and Olathe area. Louie married Chonita Trujillo on July 8, 1935 in Montrose. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1990.

In 1935, the family moved to Ridgway, Colo. then returned to Montrose in 2000 where he has made his home until his time of death. He was a past member of St. Daniel’s Catholic Church in Ouray, Colo. and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Montrose. Louie had been a member of the Montrose Elks Lodge since 1985. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. Louie loved working with his hands and was a craftsman with wood, building many keepsakes for his family over the years. He enjoyed working in his yard and garden and spending time with family. 

Surviving family members who were honored to share in Louie’s life are his two daughters, Mary McClintick of Montrose, Colo., June Padilla of Upland, Calif.; grandchildren, Teresa Gilliam and husband Jerry, Ruby Garlow and husband Mark, all of Montrose, Colo., Raymond McClintick and wife Deanna, Lonnie Padilla and wife Sheri all of California, Storm Padilla and wife Dana of Arkansas, Ronnie Maestaz and wife Amy of Arizona, Lori Davis and husband Mike of Telluride, Colo., Rhonda Payton and husband Tom of Grand Junction, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Chonita; two sons, Jackie Ray at six months, and J.R. at age 58; two daughters, Isabelle at age 11, and Emelia at age 47; one brother, John; and sister, Amada. 

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at 10 a.m., at St. Daniel’s Catholic Church in Ouray, Colo. with Rite of Committal to follow the Mass at Cedar Cemetery, in Montrose, Colo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, In memory of Louie Maestaz, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-2121.
