MONTROSE  — The city of Montrose has received a much-desired and long-awaited approval from the Colorado Transportation Commission to move forward with the Main Street/San Juan Bypass swap between the city and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

City staff and CDOT Regional Transportation Director Weldon Allen presented a final proposal for the plan Wednesday before the commission. It rendered its approval Thursday.

“Our community has anticipated the realization of this opportunity for many years,” City Manager Mary Watt said. “I am thrilled about the transportation commission’s decision and anxious to move forward with the possibilities that it has created for downtown Montrose.”

The swap will redesign the San Juan Bypass as the new Highway 50, and transfer ownership of Main Street between the bypass and Townsend Avenue to the city of Montrose.

" how will a bypass that runs north-to-south affect a downtown that runs east-to-west? "

" "Mark" I moved here from a town that put in a bypass and routed most traffic around downtown. Made downtown more ped. friendly and it thrived. Imagine not having to yell at the person next to you because a truck is going by, or be woried about being ran over during Main in Motion. Just wait and see this will be great for downtown... Thank you City of Montrose! Great Job!!! To most of the folks posting... would you like some cheese with that whine? "

" I sure hope Wells Fargo and other businesses remodel their facades. The 1960's white brick looks cheap. How about making the exterior look like the original design. It would bring some class to downtown. "

" No matter how you feel about the South vs. Downtown argument you must realize MUCH more money has been spent on S. townsend infrastructure - both tax and private dollars- than will ever be spent downtown. And yet the heart of any small town is its downtown. What would "S. Townsend in Motion" look like? "

" Hey cal, It appears like you need to sign-on to Obama's ticket if you're looking for a free hand-out. I don't see how this is a big win for downtown property owners, when valuable traffic numbers will be vastly diminished.

If the change does turn out to be beneficial, then that's great for us. You "Southies" have had your share of my tax dollars for long enough. "

" This boondoggle does nothing more than promote the interests of downtown property owners at tax payer expense. This is small town politics at its worst.
When will the City do something to promote my business and enhance my property values?...for free!

    Corruption, Montrose style. "

" Most likely, the city will bulldoze all the recent improvements, change the color scheme and do it all again. This will of course happen during peak travel and tourist season. "

" Now lets see what can become of it. Will the city do the right thing and make downtown a attractive pedestrain friendly area? or just plant more flowers and call it good. "
