MONTROSE — Get ready to talk. The StoryCorps oral history initiative is coming to Montrose Thursday with a unique opportunity: The chance to add your story to the American legacy while simultaneously connecting with a family member or other loved one.

"Our mission is to honor and celebrate other people's lives through the act of listening," Sacha Evans of StoryCorps said Friday.

Hosted by KVNF Radio, StoryCorps' mobile team will be in Montrose from Aug. 27 through Sept. 2 and will use the Montrose Regional Library to conduct recorded interviews from a cross-section of the population. (Opening day events are from 10:30 a.m. to noon).

For 40 minutes, two people who know one another will converse about their lives, asking one another about proudest moments, biggest accomplishments and a variety of other topics. The interviews are recorded onto CDs, which are given to the participants. A second copy goes to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Interviews are by appointment. Half of available appointments are for the general public; the others are of people selected by community organizations working with StoryCorps to obtain a diverse body of stories reflective of the population in Montrose, Evans said.

StoryCorps travels to Paonia from Sept. 4 to 19; here, interviews will be conducted in the Airstream trailer StoryCorps converted into a mobile studio. The project hopes to collect 120 interviews while in Montrose and Paonia.

Evans said mobile booths travel throughout the U.S. and StoryCorps partners with public radio stations in order to gather stories in towns both large and small. StoryCorps plans on traveling to Colorado Springs after its West Slope stops.
