OURAY — A retired state patrolman is dead, after a three-bike crash on Highway 550 Saturday.

Colorado State Patrol Lt. Col. Robert Habliston (retired), 70, of Grand Junction, was southbound on his 2000 Harley Davidson. As he came over a rise, he saw three vehicles stopped in the southbound lane, waiting for the first vehicle to turn into a private drive. Habliston braked to stop, but lost control and rolled a quarter turn, then slid into the northbound lanes of traffic, striking a 2004 Honda motorcycle operated by Bruce Demaree of New River, Ariz.

Both men were thrown from their bikes and Habliston was then hit by another motorcycle, operated by Larry Whiteside of Durango.

Demaree sustained serious injuries and was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital. He was in fair condition Monday.

Whiteside was reported with moderate injuries.
