MONTROSE — Lorene Sybil (Bennett) Brown went home to be with the Lord Aug. 28, 2009. She was born in Olathe, Colo. Jan. 8, 1925 to Charles (Charlie) Wesley and Rhoda Idell (Shular) Bennett. Her mother died shortly after her birth, leaving behind 16-day-old Lorene and her 1?-year-old brother, Lyle. Lorene was taken in by her mother’s parents, George and Drucilla Shular and Lyle was taken in by her dad’s parents, John and Phoebe Bennett (both sets of grandparents from Missouri). Lorene and her brother returned to Olathe about nine years later, where Lorene attended school, graduating from Olathe High School in 1944.

On Dec. 25, 1945, she married Albert G. Smith of Olathe and moved to Grand Junction, Colo. where their daughters were born and raised. On Jan. 15, 1975, after several years of being single, Lorene married Norman E. Brown of Page, Ariz. They attended the Assembly of God Church and in 1978 accepted Jesus as their personal Savior and began serving their Lord. Following Norm’s death in 1982, Lorene returned to her beloved Colorado. She moved to Montrose to be near her daughter, Beverly. Lorene was a long-standing member of Crossroads Victory Church. She had been active in Pardoned Players, Women’s Aglow, Church Greeter, rest home ministries and caring for the church kitchen. For 25 years she faithfully led the women’s jail ministry in Montrose and wrote letters to 30 prisoners a week.
