GUNNISON — One man died in a canoeing accident on Taylor Reservoir last week, after shifting winds filled his vessel with water and tipped it.

Gunnison County Undersheriff Rick Besecker said that Jeffrey Allen Auerbach, 47, of Grand Junction, was pulled from the water by United States Forest Service officer Mike Fuller and a Thornton, Colo. couple on Aug. 31, but died at the scene despite efforts to save him.

The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office released its blotter information about the accident Tuesday.

Bystanders were able to rescue Auerbach’s 26-year-old stepdaughter, Meranda Newman, and his 15-year-old pet terrier from the frigid waters.
