OLATHE — Mary Josephine Kubin, age 69, passed away at her home in Olathe on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009. Mary Josephine was born Dec. 20, 1939 to John and Mary (Unrein) Appelhanz on High Mesa, near Olathe, Colo. The family later moved to California Mesa. Mary Jo started first grade at Stone School in 1944. In 1947, the family moved to a farm south of Montrose. She went to the Riverside school and finished the eighth grade there. She then went on to Montrose High School, graduating in 1957. Before her marriage, she worked for the law firm of Bryant, Petrie, and Waldeck. She married George Kubin on Dec. 1, 1962 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Montrose. George and Mary Jo farmed and ranched in the Montrose/Olathe area their entire married lives. Mary Jo’s favorite activities were gardening and genealogy. She loved good music, especially her brother George’s band. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose delight was her faith and her family.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by both of her parents. A rosary will be recited for Mary Jo Sunday night, Sept. 13, 2009, at 7 p.m., by Father Benedict Hughes at Valley Lawn Funeral Home, followed by a Requiem Mass, also officiated by Father Benedict Hughes, at 10 a.m. Monday morning, Sept. 14, at Valley Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Grand View Cemetery. Memorial contributions, in Mary Jo’s memory, may be made to Holy Guardian Angels Catholic School, 59350 Carnation Rd., Olathe, CO 81425. Valley Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of the care and arrangements for Mary Jo and her family, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-4400.
