MONTROSE — Shirley Leonard, age 84, passed away on Monday evening, Sept. 14, 2009, at San Juan Living Center.  

Shirley Irene David was born on Feb. 1, 1925 on Dallas Divide in Ridgway to parents, Ralph Jesse and Bertha Alice (Batcheldar). There she attended school and graduated from Montrose High School. She met William Randall Leonard in Ogden, Utah and they were married in 1944. Mr. Leonard passed away in 1986 in Mississippi.

Shirley loved to travel, but her true passion was volunteerism. She was a long time volunteer at the Montrose Memorial Hospital and always greeted visitors, patients and staff with her friendly, loving smile. She also volunteered at the Pavilion Senior Center and the Ute Indian Museum. She was a long time cherished member of the Chamber of Commerce Red Coats. During her free time, she loved music and dancing, especially to the polka and swing.  

Shirley is survived by her children: William R. “Randy” Leonard and wife Teresa of Montrose; Paul David Leonard and wife Bonnie of northern California; Robin Leonard and wife Marsha of Clifton, Colo.; Gloria Chalfant of Montrose; Lynn Bryant and husband Homer of northern California; and Tami Davidson of Los Angeles, Calif. Shirley is also survived by 12 grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.  

A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be officiated on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at 1 p.m., at Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors. A reception for family and friends will follow the service.
