We had exactly the same experience at Buckhorn last summer.  I moved away from here for a couple decades, and Buckhorn used to be a secluded place, one of my favorites.  We camped there right after moving back, and there was a group of people running a dirt bike up and down through the campground with no lights, playing music you could hear throughout the campground, and shooting until at least midnight.  I haven't been back to camp since.  Since it belongs to the city, I'd say someone from the P.D. or sheriff's office needs to drop by regularly and make sure that kind of thing isn't happening.  I'm a little surprised that so many people with so little respect for nature and other people even go up there.

"

He got away with it, you probaly would be in lots of trouble, so please be careful at all times, and respect and enjoy safe firearm use.....Dont want to sound like Father Responsiblity but just think it over please..Thanks POCM "

" "Chickenman" Did I say I get drunk then shoot guns? Sorry, that's just a miss understanding. Guess I did type it in the same sentence... again with the grammar. :o) Getting drunk and shooting are definitely separate for me... not that I get drunk that often. I will occasionally have a beer and shoot a gun, don't see the problem there, as I am a responsible drinker. CM; I normally enjoy what you have to say, however here I think your reading a little too much into what I wrote. "

" Kinda scary when someone thinks its ok to drink and shoot guns. For me I am very serious when it comes to firearm safety. As a youth I learned once the 1st beer came out all guns were off limits, no exceptions. Theres no problem discharging a firearm on blm land for hunting or target pratice, but to just shoot to shoot when drunk is asking for trouble. Just think if you were injured,or accidently shot someone else, good luck when so far out and drunk!!!.....POCM "

JWEEE why is it necessary to yell, shoot and get drunk obnoxious anywhere at anytime? Is that really fun? Dont you understand the dangers of drinking and guns? I dont think you have any respect for the land or your own safety if you really had the common sense you say, youd be more respectful and careful than that.... Think about it Thanks POCM "

" "JudyJ" So how is doing all those things I described abusing public land? I don't litter, ride off trails, etc. However, if I'm camping away from other people I have been known to party till the next morning. there's plenty of room out there for us all... that is my point. If I'm camping next to someone else its common courtesy to not disturb them. Maybe you misunderstood me. "

It goes with the whole concept of sharing the land. Jwee uses it as he sees fit but not at the expence of others, Thanx Jwee "

    " To JWeeeeeeeeeeeeee,

So, it's OK to yell, shoot, get drunk and obnoxious on the land if it's BLM or forest service? What/who gave you the idea that it's perfectly acceptable to be a total jerk because it isn't city property? We're all responsible for being decent human beings and taking care of what we all "own" collectively. It's not "common courtesy" to abuse the area just because nobody is close by. Golden Rule rules. Think about it. "

JWeee wrote on Oct 5, 2009 1:16 PM:

" I like to get away and be loud and party in the mountains also... shoot guns, play music, ride ATV's. However, when I do these things I stay away from other people. I go to BLM or forest service land, not city parks. This is just common courtesy... I don't think cops should be up there, but there should be a camp host. "

I’m surprised it elicited such a comment from you. I guess law and order as well as respect for others doesn’t apply to someone with a 4.0 GPA, my bad. I better take my uneducated self to the library and research Colorado laws as they pertain to disturbing the piece, excessive noise, harassment and disorderly conduct. Maybe I’ll learn where it says you can molest my solitude. "

The POINT is... cops need to stay where they are needed not in the mountains where people are and should be doing what they want to do, and that is enjoying the outdoors however they see fit. And yes I like to be loud and party in the mountains. Get over it! "

Is it so hard to show some courtesy to others? It's really pretty simple, treat others the way you would like to be treated. "

I'm not sure about the complaining part, but you're correct about being able to camp around here with nobody around. I go camping all the time and don't see anyone. The problem is most people want to camp... in a campground. And when you do that, differing personalities must interact. And your idea of fun may not be the same as the people next to you. That’s called reality.

Heck ATV’s and people partying never bothered me… it was the screaming kids and indifferent parents that drove me away! "

Why is it that some of us (who don't actually own this town/city that is no longer a bunch o' farms) don't understand the Golden Rule? However, I'd give up on Buckhorn as a lost cause. Go elsewhere -- but hope that cops eventually show up at Buckhorn on Friday/Saturday to enforce laws they're supposed to enforce. "

If you want to go camping with nobody around, it's really easy to do here. But certain people don't want to do that because then they would have nothing to complain about! "

I think every one here is correct to a point. ATV’s can be enjoyable and fun but as with all things there is a time and a place. Our public lands are multiple use so to believe they will remain pristine in just ignorance. Were all going to have to share and be respectful of each other. "

If you dont like it, there are PLENTY of secluded mountains in Colorado to choose from, go there!! How ridiculous. "

" Farm Girl, so you feel that riding your ATV at Midnight where many other people are camping and keeping them all awake is ok? It is the thoughtless actions such as that, riding off trails and tearing up land that is getting your riding rights taken away. I dont have a problem with ATV riding, personally I find it a lot of fun however just like people that shouldnt be driving cars there are those that shouldnt have ATVs/Motorcycles either. "

JudyJ wrote on Sep 29, 2009 8:44 AM:

    " To Farm Girl,

Who said ATVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles should be banned? I surely wouldn't, because we own a 4WD, which we drive responsibly. The people who have complaints are saying that others are operating them recklessly and without regard to other people around them. Still, no way is operation of ATVs "part of living" in Montrose. Who made that one up? "

Farm girl wrote on Sep 28, 2009 7:56 PM:

" I personally ride my 4wheeler up at Buckhorn and camp up there on a regualar basis. For all you people who think we should stay away its people like you that are causing so much land to be shut off to 4wheelers and MC. If you dont like it then MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE!! Its part of living in Montrose. Its just the way it is. "

The washboardy road was fine; chaparral colors were great, except for the smoke over the valley. At the lakes, we found jbarely a handful of "older" people enjoying their surroundings -- no marijuana smells, not ATVs. We must have missed the weekend "crazies." "

Where and how have the teeny-tiniest minority us gotten the idea that they're somehow entitled to grossly, outrageously offend everybody else anytime, anyhow, in any way? They are definitely the ones who should be forced to go elsewhere -- or arrested for disturbing the peace. "

Happy Camper wrote on Sep 28, 2009 9:27 AM:

" Calvin & MH, there is a big difference in partiyng a bit and riding ATV's which I dont mind at all but I think there is a limit to what time you are being rude about it. Maybe if you are wanting an all night riding and music fest you should be the one to move where you wont disturb other people. Most people I know dont want to be up all night, they go to have some peace and quiet, if they wanted noise they would camp in their backyard in town. "

calvin wrote on Sep 27, 2009 8:00 AM:

" You should try camping on the Plateau, especially during Fat Fred's. It is really peaceful. Look, don't camp anywhere near water or near a Mountain Pass. Stay away from designated ATV and MC trails. Do not camp if there is a cow withing 3 miles (flies, smell) That still leaves a few million acres for you to camp all by yourself. I think I smell a liberal. "

From Montrose go 550 south to Buckhorn Rd and turn left. Follow rough dirt road all the way to Buckhorn Lakes. When you hear the loud music and smell the weed, you are there!

You can also look it up on Google Earth, it does show the road names on how to get there. "

It is very nice up there, 2 lakes, aspens and big spruce trees, the perfect place to camp if only everyone gave a darn about other people. "

It was not a fun camping trip, when you go camping you want peace and quiet and to hear the sounds of nature. If I wanted to hear loud music and be in a large crowd I would have gone to a concert.
I suggest we find a new place to camp since Buckhorn is crowded with annoying people. "
