H. Arline (Grigg Weidner) Ewald Feb. 2, 1920 — Sept. 26, 2009 BOULDER — Arline Ewald of Boulder, Colo. peacefully passed away last Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, ending a long and fulfilling journey in which she shared much happiness and many memorable experiences with family and friends along the way. Arline was born in Salina, Kan. to Calvin and Wanda Brookhouser Brizendine, and was the first of five children. She was raised in Salina and married Walter Grigg in 1940. Soon after, they moved to Larned, Kan. Both she and her husband learned to fly in 1941, and Arline was the first woman in western Kansas to receive her private pilot’s license. During the World War II, she joined Walt in several locations in the United States where he trained pilots. When Walt went over seas during the war, Arline went back to Larned, where Walt later joined her. In Larned, Arline was a homemaker and also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. In 1957, the family moved to Lawrence, Kan. Prior to Walt’s death in 1963, Arline became Secretary to the Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas (1963-1968). In 1966, the family started a gradual migration to Boulder, Colo. Arline arrived in 1968, first managing the Coach House clothing store (1968 -1974) and then became the Administrative Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Administration at the University of Colorado (1974-1980). Arline married Gale Weidner Sr. in 1974. He passed away in 1985. She then married Earl Ewald in 1990, and he passed away in 2002. Arline was a marvelous cook and enjoyed reading, gardening, music and dancing, being with friends and her bridge clubs. She was a member of the Boulder Country Club and played golf for over 52 years. Arline also enjoyed many travels with her husbands. And, church was very important to her. She was a member at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Boulder before joining St. John’s, where she was on the Altar Guild for many years. She always gave to others less fortunate and supported multiple charities and causes. She was a very gracious and caring person, and a loving matriarch dedicated to her family. She will be deeply missed. Arline is survived by her three children, Judith (Bodin) Falco of Boulder, Stanley Grigg with wife Bonnie (Flanigan) of Montrose, Colo. and Mady Feist of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Deborah Bodin O’Grady with husband David and daughter Juleah of Erie, Colo., Michelle Bodin Cain with husband Patrick and children Emily, Alicia and Patrick Jr. of Superior, Colo., Michael Grigg with partner Valerie Morris of Seattle, Wash., Scott Grigg with wife Kelly of Seattle, Shaye Feist and daughter Keira of Longmont, Colo., Heidi Feist with fiancé David Franzen of Seattle, Shane Flanigan with wife Karen and children Matthew, Kristen and Rylan of Irvine, Calif., and Keely Flanigan Caulkins with husband Matthew of Roslindale, Mass. Also surviving Arline, is a sister Mady Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister-in-law Katherine Brizendine of Henderson, Nev.; nieces and nephews with their extended families; and the families of Gale Weidner Sr. and Earl Ewald. Arline was preceded in death by three brothers. A memorial service for Arline will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, 1419 Pine Street, on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
