MONTROSE — Edith Thomas, 98, passed away on Sept. 27, 2009, at Valley Manor Care Center.

Edith was born Sept. 17, 1911, to Lydia and Christian Hoff in Avon, S.D., and was raised in South Dakota by her foster parents, Emma and Frederick Weidenbach. She graduated with a degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska, and served as a registered nurse in Denver and Montrose for 54 years before her retirement. She earned several awards, including Nurse of the Year. Edith was an avid learner. She traveled the world for health care (including Switzerland and China) continuing education and she taught community classes for seniors when she was into her 70’s. She was one of Colorado’s oldest Red Cross volunteers dating back to WWII. Edith was an animal lover/owner, gardener, Bridge player and “party hearty” with many friends. At age 81, she joined five other women, 30 years her junior, for a roaring raft trip down the Colorado River. She was famous for her pecan pie. Edith was an exceptional woman and friend and will be greatly missed. After her retirement, she was exceptionally active in many volunteer activities in the Montrose area and was recognized as one of Montrose’s leading citizens. Edith was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Montrose. Edith married Everett Thomas, a veteran of the United States Air Force, on May 8, 1946. After 34 years of marriage, Everett passed away on July 1, 1982. Edith was also predeceased by her foster brother, Lawrence Weidenbach, and his wife, Ramona Cordry. Edith is survived by her sister-in-law, Effie Toone, Tulsa, Okla., her nephew and Godson, David L. Weiden, a professor at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Ind., and many friends in Montrose.

A memorial service in Montrose will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at 11 a.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel. The service will conclude at the chapel. A graveside service will be Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at 10:15 a.m., at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colo. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, 802 E.
