William ‘Bill’ Moon

MONTROSE — William “Bill” Moon passed away Sept. 18, 2009 at San Juan Living Center in Montrose, Colo. at the age of 86. Bill was born at Perryton, Texas on July 31, 1923 to Roland and Lorna (Furnish) Moon. He came to Colorado with his father and two of his five sisters. His family later returned to Texas, while Bill remained with G.B. Thayer on Log Hill Mesa. He finished the eighth grade at Pinion Grove School on the Mesa. After spending his teenage years on Log Hill, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and served four years in the Pacific Theater. In 1960, Bill and Mildred Thayer were married at the Colona Church in Colona, Colo. Bill is survived by his wife, Mildred of the family home; his daughter, Valery (Ed) Morris of Montrose; step-son, Earl (Jill) Ashing of Palmer, Alaska; one granddaughter, Amanda Rumbaugh of Loma, Colo.; five grandsons, Brian Rumbaugh of Grand Junction, Colo., Keith (Missy) Morris of Montrose, Travis Ashing of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gavin (Amy) Ashing of Palmer, Alaska, and Matthew (Patty) Morris of Montrose; and six geat-grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Louise (Stanley) Stewart of Scott Valley, Calif., and Oleta Fae Brunton of Portland, Ore. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

A private family service in honor and celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date. Valley Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements, 505 S. 2nd St., Montrose, CO 81401 (970) 249-4400.
