MONTROSE — All gunshot wounds are not created equal, Montrose County Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield told a crowd of professionals Thursday.

Canfield, a retired pathologist, was one of several speakers during the Colorado Coroners Association's outreach training in Montrose.

The training, which continued on Friday, attracted more than 70 members of law enforcement agencies and coroners' offices from throughout the state and addressed everything from establishing time of death, to notifying next of kin.

The training also stressed the importance of law enforcement and coroners working together to control and preserve death scenes, and featured a few hours of mock-scenes where attendees could hone their techniques.

Canfield told audience members they could not assume such things as gun caliber when autopsying a gunshot death.
