Where is the outrage?

Re:  Plenty of taxpayer money for MEDC and firefighters

Dee Laird’s letter (Daily Press, Oct. 21) praising Jim Haughness for his courage and fiscal responsibility as a Director in voting against a wage increase for firefighters is absolutely accurate. Haughness was one of only two non-employee firefighters who led the successful ballot issue that resulted in a much-needed Station 2 and adequate funding for our highly professional fire department. Those funds have been well-managed until the recent board vote for a 3% wage increase -unnecessary, unwarranted, and dangerous in today’s dismal financial environment.

Denver’s Police, Fire and Sheriff’s Departments all deferred any wage increase for at least a year, as did Social Security offices, there being a decrease, not increase, in the cost of living. The other 2 members of the Fire District’s 5 member Board present for the vote violated their fiduciary responsibility, like the most recent additions to our BOCC, by blundering ahead, spending taxpayers’ money like proverbial drunken sailors (sorry Navy folks-it is a descriptive cliché).

Why should they be any different than the insanity in Washington and our state capitol! With a national debt of over $7.6 trillion, the elected officials have burdened our children and grandchildren with insurmountable debt, over 50% of our entire Gross Domestic Product. Has no one ever considered living within our means? The 10% unemployment is deceivingly conservative and may be the standard for years to come. Just look at the empty buildings in Montrose and the pages of foreclosures in the Daily Press each week. Yesterday’s world is gone and will not be returning, just like our four or more best county employees who opted for more hospitable employment elsewhere. You, the voter, the taxpayer, must voice your outrage, or alternatively, continue like lambs being led to the slaughter. It is your choice. The future of this county, state and nation is in your hands.
