GUNNISON-The Olathe Pirates continued their run to perfection Friday afternoon by dominating the Gunnison Cowboys in a 45-14 victory— a win that primarily showcased OHS’s defense.

The Pirates defense has been stingy all season, but they haven’t been a stingy as they were in Gunnison yesterday afternoon. The Pirates held the Cowboys scoreless through the first three quarters of the game before they allowed any points. The Cowboys only two scores on the Pirates came against their junior varsity team and that was with five minutes left in the game.

“I was so impressed with our defense tonight,” OHS head coach Ryan Corn said. “To hold a team scoreless after three quarters and only allowing them 30 yards in total offense before the fourth quarter is just amazing.”

As amazing as the defense was, the offense opened it up quite a bit as well. OHS senior Garhett Jurgens began the scoring for the Pirates five minutes into the game with a 12-yard run, and with Sergio Salazar’s extra point, Olathe led 7-0.

Markley followed that with a 30-yard touchdown run two minutes later, putting OHS up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The scoring didn’t stop there for the Pirates. At the six-minute mark in the second quarter, Jurgens ran to the right and found a seam and busted out a 51-yard touchdown scamper to put the Pirates up 21-0.

“We did start things off a little slow, but the kids picked up their intensity level towards the end of the first quarter and we started to play to our caliber,” added Corn.

Markley added two more touchdowns in the quarter, one of which was a 23-yard passing play from Jurgens with 18 seconds left before the half.

The Pirates, who are generally known as a running team, came out slinging the ball for most of the second half, instead of their usual pound-it-right-at-you running style.

Two minutes into the third quarter, Jurgens threw his second passing touchdown to fellow senior Devon Brown to give the Pirates 42-0 lead.

“I thought offensively we looked good.” Corn said. “We went out tonight and decided to throw the ball a lot more than we usually do and it worked for us,” he said.

The Pirates final points came on a 51-yard field goal by Sergio Salazar, his longest ever.

Overall, the Pirates rushed for 273 yards in the game. Markley led the Pirates ground attack with 120 yards on 10 carries. Jurgens finished with 78 yards on seven carries, while Kris Nieto rushed 48 yards on seven carries. Jurgens completed four out of five passes 48 yards and threw two touchdown down passes.

Olathe has two remaining home games left, with Basalt coming to town next week.

“We’re going to have to be focused for Basalt,” Corn said. “They definitely can show up and give us a challenge.
