GUNNISON—The Lady Pirates volleyball team crossed a bridge they haven’t crossed in awhile — beating league rival, Gunnison.
Olathe, who’s 12-7 overall and 10-6 in the Western Slope League, defeated Gunnison in three straight sets 25-17, 25-12 and 25-21.

Rosentreter was overly excited that his squad keep their composure throughout the match and that anytime Gunnison tried to get back into it the Lady Pirates would swat them away. Each set the Lady Pirates played, they had decent leads. That really played to the success of his team, said the coach, noting how there’s been previous matches this season where Olathe had leads and would lose composure when the other team started coming back into the game.
Leading the way for the Pirates was junior Emily Brummitt who recorded 14 kills, while fellow junior Morgan Stansberry added 13. Sophomore Kylie Tait, who according to her coach, had the biggest night of her young career. Tait tallied eight kills, 19 digs, three blocks and also recorded three serving aces.
“All three hitters played amazing and combined, only had three attacking errors,” Rosentreter said. “The biggest difference tonight from previous matches was not letting balls hit the floor and controlling our serves.”
Not only did the Lady Pirates win big, but they did it in front of a large Pirates friendly crowd. The whole Pirates football team was on hand to watch the Lady Pirates victory and according to Rosentreter, helped his team win with their loud cheering.
With the regular season over, OHS will wait and see who they play next Saturday to begin the open round of the Class 2A volleyball playoffs.
