DURANGO—With a lot of heart and senior leadership, the Lady Indians volleyball team upended the Lady Demons in five sets Saturday afternoon.
With each set came a hard fought battle. A battle that MHS head coach Shane Forrest knew wasn’t going to be easy.

With the win MHS finishes the regular season 15-4 overall and 7-3 in the Southwestern League and can now solely claim second place in the league. The victory will also allow MHS to host a district tournament next weekend in the friendly confines of Lloyd McMillan Gymnasium with a No. 1 seed.
“I’m so proud of our team,” Forrest said. “I give a lot of credit to the four seniors they were resilient throughout the match and kept the younger players focused all the way through.”
According to Forrest, the fourth set proved to be the most crucial one of the afternoon. At one point the Lady Indians found themselves down by more than 10 points, but despite quite a few hitting errors, battled back to tie the match at 22.
“The key play in that set was a huge block by seniors Courtney Geesing and Kelsie Dardis. That block put us ahead 23-22,” Forrest said.
Following the big block, Geesing added a couple of kills and MHS found themselves squaring off with the Lady Demons in a fifth and final set— one that they would eventually go onto win and claim second place honors for the SWL.
“Again I give a lot of credit to the seniors and their leadership on getting the team back on track and just believing that we can go out and play with anybody,” Forrest said. “They (seniors) just played awesome tonight.”
Leading the way for Montrose was Geesing, who had 25 kills and posted 26 digs. Dardis had 14 kills and four blocks, while fellow senior Jori Ayers added 10 kills, five blocks and posted 15 digs. Sophomore Emma Cooling had a team high 31 digs, while senior Sarah DeJulio added 14.
Forrest also noted that sophomore Kyla Kille had two huge serving aces that helped the Lady Indians keep their momentum, which would eventually propel the team through fifth set.
“We had contributions from everybody this afternoon,” she said “It was just an excellent match all the way around.”
Montrose will host 6-team district tournament beginning next Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
