MONTROSE ” The first snow of the season packed a bit of a wallop, with about 4 inches on the ground by Wednesday afternoon, with some melting and a smattering of showers through early evening.

The National Weather Service projected up to 10 inches in the area by midnight and placed Montrose under a winter weather advisory until that time.

“This is our first major winter storm of the area, affecting much of Western Colorado,” said John Kyle, data acquisition program manager for NWS in Grand Junction.

Montrose was put under a winter weather warning until midnight, although the storm was expected to clear the area by the weekend.

“Friday’s going to be much improved, relative to what we will expect tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow,” Kyle said Wednesday. “It’s a very impressive storm.”

A large area of low pressure from the Great Basin carried Old Man Winter into Montrose for his first visit of the year. That low was centered over the Four Corners region Wednesday, and was expected to track out over the Front Range, then to the northeast in the next few days.
