Elmer Eugene Vannest

DELTA - Hunting, fishing and the great outdoors were Elmer’s passions. Elmer Eugene Vannest of Delta, Colo. entered into eternal peace at the age of 68 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, serenely in his sleep, after a brief, severe illness. Elmer was born in Model, Colo., March 14, 1941 and was the third child of seven children in the family of Eldon and Dorothy Vannest from LaSalle, Colo. 

He spent his childhood in the San Luis Valley and in LaSalle, Colo., graduating from LaSalle High having been an all-around athlete. He was all-state football, basketball and baseball. Elmer started college at Adams State as a freshman starter on the football team until he unfortunately broke his leg playing against Air Force Academy.  

Elmer was a heavy equipment operator working in road construction, for San Miguel County, for the City of Delta, and for Delta County before retiring in 2004. Other jobs included working for the Town of Telluride, Colorado Division of Wildlife, UPS, and several ranches and farms. He also had his own business outfitting for deer and elk hunting for 10 years.

Elmer is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Vannest of Delta; son, Mark Vannest of Delta and daughter Dena Vannest, his mother, Dorothy Vannest; and four brothers: Leon (Betty) Vannest of Delta, Colo., Frank (Karen) Vannest of LaSalle, Colo., Lyle (Judi) Vannest of LaSalle, Colo., and Gerald (Debby) of Greeley, Colo.; one sister, Nadine (Dave) Reid of Oak Creek, Colo.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, one brother, his father, two nephews and one niece. 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in the name of Elmer Vannest has been established at Bank of the West, 402 Main Street, Delta, Colo.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
