MONTROSE — Halloween candy turned sour for two suspected thieves Saturday. According to the Montrose Police Department, Caleb Culver-Godfrey, 19, and his 16-year-old companion attacked two little girls and took off with their trick-or-treat bags. They were found later by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, who is the father of one of the girls.

The pair stand accused of robbery and misdemeanor assault, Montrose Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard said.

According to Lillard, the girls, ages 11 and 12, were out trick-or-treating at 8 p.m. Halloween, and were walking down the bike path between South Ninth and Tenth streets when two people, later identified as Godfrey and the teenage girl, walked up quickly behind them.

The 16-year-old allegedly grabbed one of the girl’s sweatshirt from behind, pulling her back with enough force to knock the child to the ground and causing her to feel choked. The older girl then reportedly grabbed the child’s candy and took off.

Godfrey is accused of grabbing the other child in what was described as a choke hold or headlock before making off with her candy.

" This is the problem with blogs. Kids candy getting stolen the night of Halloween! Wow call in the feds. This is being blown out of proportion. Arrest all of my big brothers, cousins, and teenagers from my old nieghborhood right now. The police shouldn't be involved. Parent s deal with the parents, get an apology and move on. I know, better yet, charge these two teens with felonies that will teach for stealing candy from girls. "

" I agree with Get Real. Seriously people if dark is what you fear what would you do if you lived in Alaska? In the winter it is dark out on average 20 hours a day, would you have them home at noon? Or then would it be ok to let your kids out in the summer at midnight when it is light out? 8:00 isnt that late really. "

Get Real wrote on Nov 8, 2009 5:40 PM:

" Wow, what a bunch of fear-mongers we have here in Montrose! I was unaware that kids are being kidnapped every second of every day here in Montrose.

Seriously people, calm down! Kidnapping by a stranger is in fact VERY, VERY RARE! Do bad things happen? Unfortunately, yes. But that is the rare exception, not the rule. If you live your life in this much constant non-existent fear, I feel very sorry for you (and your mentally abused kids). "

" wow i called the police for something far more serious where my kids were actually hurt and we knew who did it, there was no news article , no response by half the department, no courtesy or concern, and no arrest of the suspects. yeah, i'm sure the fact the dad is a deputy and in tight with them have NOTHING to do with the outcome!! "

" You can get kidnapped right out of your home. It isnt like the girls were out all alone while everyone else in Montrose was home fast asleep, it was Halloween for goodness sake, many many people were out and yes at 8:00. "

" I KNOW the FACTS and the FACT is, MANY children get kidnapped right from their own driveways!!!! Honestly 2 little girls walking alone after dark, they are lucky they didn't lose ALOT more than their candy. "

be safe wrote on Nov 7, 2009 2:14 PM:

" It don't matter if they were a block away, or in the driveway, it only takes a second for a child to be kidnapped. Someone stated they were only like a block away, well they got there candy stolen, and there was plenty of time that if the person wanted to they could have grabbed both girls, tossed them into a vehicle, and drove off, and been long gone before an adult even knew they were missing.(cont) "

" I didn't say they should be in bed at 8pm, I said they should be home getting ready for bed, baths, and some family time before bed at about 9 or 9:30. That gives them about 30 minutes to fall asleep, and be up at 8 (10 hours) for chores, or church, or whatever. Yes we go AS A FAMILY to fireworks, there is always an adult with them! They can also stay up late on weekends, but they can't be out roaming the streets alone, after dark at age 11. "

" Well if the kids needed to be up in the morning at 6:00 a.m. then I guess 8:00 p.m. is a little late, geez, god forbid anyone had fun on a holiday night. I suppose your kids dont get to see the 4th of July FIreworks either since they don start till around 9:00. Keeping your kids under such a leash isnt the answer either. "

Please if you don't know all of the facts don't go pointing fingers at the parents of these two young girls who did nothing wrong. I beleive they were not even a block from the house! KNOW THE FACTS OR BE QUIET!!! "

" thank you - the guy- for your opinion. my family had the same situation. wonderful parents, there was never any abuse, no cuss words, no smoking, no drinking, we were taken to chucrch on sundays and wednesdays. private schools, and still one brother committed suicide, one brother is an alcoholic, my sister is a hard drug user. all siblings have been to jail. i am a law abiding citizen with a career, but was a terror as a teen. we were spanked with a belt when needed, so there was discipline. so i totally agree with your post. " As a parent now, I stop handing out candy at 8pm, that is late enough for those little ones to be out in the cold, even more so if their parents are not with them "

bad choices wrote on Nov 6, 2009 4:18 PM:

" First off 8 pm is a little late for an 11 or 12 year old to be out. Children that age need around 10 hours of sleep a night. So they should have been home getting ready for bed! Second, the deputy should know how the crime in this town is getting out of hand, and he or another parent should have been close by. We wern't allowed to trick or treat alone till we were 13, by than we didn't want to anymore, we just went bag snatching!!!! (GASP) "

" so how's this argument of yours work again?

I came from a family of three kids.

one is a successful self starter CEO, the other an artist/musician single dad, the third is in prison for assault with a deadly weapon.

how does the whole bad parenting argument you are spouting go again exactly?....we have three distinct personalities in our group...and only one set of parents...how come we dont all have the same behavior?

but it's easier to stand behind the fence and point..yelling "burn the witch !!...It bad parenting !!"

    *facepalm "

" I think robbery is way out of line. I think the ONLY reason the charges are so steep is because one childs father is a deputy. "

parent too wrote on Nov 5, 2009 11:02 AM:

" And as for these girls, why were they out after dark alone. Only being 11 and 12 come on now what kind of parenting do we call that. It's Halloween and we all remember of what could happen when we were kids. yes it's true the boys were wrong for doing what they did, but the parents of these girls were also wrong for letting them go out ALONE. "

Parent wrote on Nov 3, 2009 3:48 PM:

" Another example of bad behavior .It is the responsibility of a parent to know what , when and where their minor children are, and what they are doing. It is also a parents responsibility to raise children to be an asset to this world NOT A PROBLEM. In this case I feel that the parents of this 16 year old should be held equally responsible for their childs bad behavior, BAD BEHAVIOR COMES FROM BAD PARENTING. "
