Thomas Helmbrecht, 50, is in “serious plea negotiations” with the district attorney’s office, his attorney said, also asking the court for clarity concerning whether Helmbrecht was allowed telephone contact with his children.
Helmbrecht, a teacher at Nucla High School, was arrested in September and subsequently charged with sexual exploitation of a child after the sheriff’s office reported finding child pornography at his home.

Monday, his attorney said the case was still under active investigation. Though Helmbrecht is allowed supervised visitation with his daughters, who were not named as victims in the case, the children have since moved out of state with relatives and that is making things difficult, his attorney said.
