CARBONDALE—The 2009 volleyball season for the Olathe Lady Pirates came to a crashing halt Saturday afternoon.

OHS went one for two in their pool and couldn’t advance into the semifinal cross bracket.

The Lady Pirates were defeated in four sets to Classical Academy. Olathe won the opening set 25-23, but fell in the following three consecutive sets losing, 25-13, 25-8 and 25-15.

“That first game I thought we played fairly well and caught them (Classical Academy) off guard. But after that first set, we just couldn’t get back into the game,” OHS head coach Dan Rosentreter said.

Rosentreter said that the biggest challenge for his team in that first match up was getting the ball over the Lady Titans big blockers.

The Lady Pirates didn’t have much success in their second match against Roaring Fork either. Losing in three straight sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-20.

“That match was the most frustrating one of the day,” Rosentreter said. “We played O.K. but had a lot of missed serves and hitting errors. You won’t win consistently if you continually make those kinds of mistakes,” he said.

Rosentreter noted that despite his teams loss in the second set, his junior outside hitter Morgan Stansberry, played an exceptional game tallying 14 kills and 16 digs in that match alone.

The Lady Pirates were already eliminated from advancing to regionals by the time they squared off with Salida, but that didn’t stop them from playing hard and earning their first victory of the day. OHS defeated the Lady Spartans in three sets winning 25-21, 25-19 and 25-20.

“I thought the kids played well in that third set when had no pressure,” Rosentreter said. “They just have played better all season when there hasn’t been any pressure.”

Leading the way for the Lady Pirates on the day were Stansberry with her 30 kills, followed by senior Jessica Byers who added 19 kills, while Emily Brummitt had 17. Stansberry also led the team with 34 digs, while sophomore Tawni Middleton recored nine access on the afternoon.

While the Lady Pirates season has come to a close, Rosentreter has already a plan in place for next season.

“Most of the kids will be coming back next season,” Rosentreter said. “So I believe that next year we will have a great opportunity to be competitive. For us it’s going to be a matter of maturing and just being able to handle things we couldn’t handle this year.”
