CORTEZ ” A second run could prove the charm for Scott Tipton, who announced yesterday his hope to unseat incumbent U.S. Congressman John Salazar.

Salazar, D-Manasa, defeated Tipton for the 3rd Congressional District in 2006. Tipton was elected to the state Legislature in 2008. The Cortez Republican currently represents District 58, which encompasses Montrose County.

He said he hadn’t initially planned to run for Congress, but that he changed his mind because of what he saw happening in Washington, D.C.

“Over the course of the last eight months, we’ve seen the national debt triple. We’ve passed a stimulus package that has not created jobs,” Tipton said.

“The straw breaking the camel’s back was government healthcare and the public option. Our congressman (Salazar) has apparently played an integral part in it.”

He said that while healthcare reform is necessary, Washington Democrats seemed afraid of encouraging competition and insurance policy-shopping across state lines. He also said current healthcare legislation does not address tort reform and comes with a $1.2 trillion price tag.

Salazar spokesman Edward Stern said Wednesday the congressman was deferring comment on Tipton’s intended run.

" Mr. Key ,your buddy Tipton has a way of bending the truth, (thats a nice way to say he lies) Scott did say he was happy being a state rep in the 58th and that is where his job is in the 58th. He also said that the GOP Congressional campaign had targeted his race and pledged 1.5 million to that race. Despite what he tells the Denver Post and the Cortez Journal, nobody at the GOP Congressional campaign office seems to know who Scott Tipton is? "

" Mr. Ahern, your wrong AGAIN! It doesn't surprise me anymore. Scott never said that he would not run for higher office. He said he was happy with the 58th but all doors were nor closed. Please check your facts. All the local, check your facts also. It started with the past representative. Feel free to conatact me. 970-275-3352 "

" Less than 30 days ago Tipton went on the record and said he would not seek higher office and that he was happy being a state rep. How can you betray the voters trust in the 58th then turn around and accept millions of $$$ from outside the State of Colorado? It certainly speaks volumes about Tiptons integrity, and moral character. Maybe Ray Rose was not that bad after all !!!! "

" elected officials thank you Scott, in your 2 short years in office you managed to push thru an unfunded state mandated pay raise for are 3 county commissioners, which I doubt they will turn down. "

" Yes, we need a conservative in office, John Salazar has proven that he is nothing more than a talking head for taxes and the socialist machine! "

" Scott when you set up your congressional web site please make sure to keep it up to date. Salazar has a counter for the National Dept on it that is only about a trillion dollars short. But what is a trillion dollars these days. "

" When Salazar ran for the congressional spot he boasted of being part of the 50 conservative democrats. So much for that lie, lets not let him promise anything else. Get rid of him. "
