MONTROSE ” Two Montrose Police officers are being credited with stopping a burglary suspect in his tracks.

Police arrested Zachary T. Velasquez, 24, early Saturday morning after a foot chase. They used a Taser to get him to comply with orders to stop, Montrose Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard said.

Velasquez was free on bond Monday. His phone number could not be immediately located. Lillard said Velasquez made no statement to police upon his arrest, and although detectives have since interviewed him, Lillard did not have details from that meeting.

Montrose Police Sgt. Phil Freismuth was responding to a burglary alarm at the Fiesta Guadalajara restaurant on West Main Saturday morning, when he spotted a man, who appeared to have something over his face, inside the building.

As Friesmuth approached from the south, the man fled the resaturant, crowbar in hand, Lillard said.

But the suspect apparently didn’t know Officer Michelle Farmer was positioned along the north side of the building until he encountered her. He reportedly fled from both officers, who chased after him.

" Job well done, but I have to agree with incredulous why even bother DA Serra will not prosecute this guy, especially if he is any way connected like his victims advocate was. I guess that is what you get when your DA is appointed and not elected by the voters. "

" Now if only our judges and DA Serra would keep these folks behind bars instead of letting them out to run. It amazes me that Serra does so much plea bargaining away of the officers' hard work in investigating and capturing criminals. Doing more...requires effort? "
