Born Dec. 27, 1917, in Meade County, Kansas, Paulene was the first of three children born to Alexander C. and Maude Mae Cope. The Cope family moved to Montrose in 1937. Paulene married Fay Lambert in August, 1938. Widowed in 1965, she married William “Bill” Wright in November, 1975. Bill preceded her in death in November, 1995. Also preceding her, were her parents; her brother, Harold Cope; and three half-sisters and a brother.
Paulene was an artist and poet, a gardener, photographer, renowned cook and instigator of most gatherings of her extended family. Roses were always an important part of Paulene’s life. A rose lover and grower for 40 years, she was a Rose Show contestant and 1995 winner of 1st Prize in the National Rose Show. She was a painter and a member of the “Barbed Wire” china painting group, a founding member of the Montrose Rose Society and American Rose Society National Show Judge Emeritus.
