MONTROSE “ Local children are learning recycling can be beneficial and a lot of fun at the same time.

The Climbing Tree Children’s Museum of Montrose held a recycling exhibit all day Tuesday, which welcomed local children and their families. As part of the event, participants were able to create and design various projects using recycled goods “ including egg cartons, straws, plastic soda bottles and more.

“It’s important kids learn from an early age about recycling,” said Kelli Kingery, president of the board of The Climbing Tree Children’s Museum.

“We want them to know there are a lot of things out there that can be used for more than one thing.”

Kingery said she first got the exhibit idea after learning other museums had successfully tried it. It all came together when the museum was awarded the Susan Olson YEA! (Youth, Education and the Arts) grant by the Olson family and the Montrose Community Foundation.

The Susan Olson grant was established by the Olson family after the former Columbine Middle School teacher died in an accident. The family and the Montrose Community Foundation award the grant to qualifying organizations making a difference in the lives of local youth. Kingery said getting the grant was terrific and that she hoped the exhibit did a great job of honoring Olson.
