Melanie Hall, the executive director of the Montrose Community Foundation, Jim Branscome, an MCF board member, and the Notebook have been putting our collective heads together in recent weeks to prepare a special project which will be published tomorrow.
It’s a special four-page “wrap” outlining the MCF’s programs, its partnerships with community groups, its financial support of organizations that enrich our area.

This special section we’re publishing tomorrow will bring awareness to the MCF’s potential, and its imagination for the future. The Foundation, with imagination.
Publishing a “wrap” around the main edition of the newspaper is a pretty big deal. We’ve only done it for special occasions. Like late last year with the Olathe Pirates won the state 2A championship; and again in January when the Daily Press covered the Obama inauguration. Working with Melanie and Jim has been professionally satisfying. Like when the papal smokes rises, we have a consensus ” of history, facts, photos and a philosophy of going forward. We hope you like enjoy it, save it and become a part of the Montrose Community Foundation and its legacy programs.
Annually, the MCF recognizes local citizens for their efforts in enriching this community. The Community Service Awards winners include: Wally Itson, Mary & Frank Koenig, Mike Hepp, Dr. Mary Vader, D.O. Dennis Vanderquist, Robin Berndt, Kit Johnson, Tom Griepentrop, Curt Robinson, Sandy Head, Francie Smiles, Paul Eller, Frank Leonard, Judy Kittson. These citizens have worked with local food banks, Scouting programs, the development of the Montrose Skate Park, a drug prevention coalition, the development of the San Juan Cancer Center and other projects.
The MCF’s board of directors are people we know, people who have led by example. John Overholser is the MCF president. Bob Tesch is the vice president. Other board members: Judy Riessen, Jim Kitchell, Jim Branscome, Phoebe Benziger, Linda Gann, Randy Havens, John Honemann, Buck Miller, Pete Peterson, Carrol Warner, Jim Whitticom.
Thursday’s Daily Press, Thanksgiving Day, will be a big ‘un: 17-18 pre-printed inserts in a another “wrap” courtesy of the good folks at Jeans Westerner.
We’ll also have a special holiday gift guide featuring local merchants. Our offices will be closed Thursday, but we’ll reopen Friday.
Shop Montrose, this ‘Black Friday,’ and this weekend!
