Senior defender Jacob Bacon and junior mid-fielder Eric Shellhorn were both selected to first team all-conference, while senior mid-fielders Ricky Zatarain, Chase Russell and sophomore mid-fielders Eliseo Gomez and Hector Almanza were selected to second team all-conference.
Bacon, a four year varsity player as a defender, had an outstanding season according to MHS head coach Jim Lewis.

Bacon was selected team MVP by his peers at the end of the season.
Shellhorn, who recored six goals” five of which were scored in league” and three assists on the season, came up big for the Indians during their 2009 campaign. He split time between mid-fielder and forward during the year.
“Teams always had to account for him,” Lewis said. “He could play any position on the field and would play whenever I needed him.”
Zatarain, a four year varsity player, recorded four goals, two of which were scored in league, and had one assist on the season. He also spent the fall helping out the Montrose football team with its kicking duties.
“Ricky started the season out playing center back, then we moved him to mid-fielder later on in the season,” Lewis said. “He has all the skills in the world and really made some big shots for us this year.”
Lewis also credited Zatarain as being close to professional ready as any player he’s been around.
Russell, a center mid-fielder, recorded one goal and six assists on the year. According to Lewis, if there was ever an award for non-stop hustle, Russell would be well deserving of it.
“He did whatever was asked of him as a center mid-fielder,” Lewis said. “He hustled everywhere and just did an outstanding job for us this season.”
As a freshman, Gomez was selected as an all-state player, and this year he didn’t disappoint. Despite an early season injury Gomez recorded five goals, four of which came in the SWL, and also added five assists.
Lewis credited Gomez as being a big and fast physical player who could score a goal whenever the team needed one.
“Gomez is just one of those kids who can put pressure on any team. Every opponent we played always had their eyes on him,” Lewis said.
Almanza on the year recorded eight goals and three assists. He played the forward position and, according to Lewis, was one of those guys who had a natural ability to keep the ball around his feet.
“He could distribute the ball or take the shot,” Lewis said. “He just did an outstanding job for us this season.”
The Montrose soccer team finished the season 10-5-1 and repeated as SWL champions. As for next year, Lewis said his team would love to “three-peat.”
