OHS head coach Harvey Starbuck, who’s been coaching the team for the last 15 years, knows his team has the talent to produce some quality wins this year.
“This group of kids all have experience,” Starbuck said. “The guys replacing last year’s seniors have all wrestled on the junior varsity and varsity levels at some point in their careers.”

“There is always something I can do make myself better,” Shank said. “I need to continue to lift harder in the weight room and push myself harder in practices. If I continue to do those things, I should have a pretty good season.”
Shank also noted that his off season workouts will be a huge factor this year when it comes to conditioning.
The back end of the Pirates’ lineup will have some new faces, along with some guys who’ve been bumped up a weight class. OHS’s Kyle Piatt, who wrestled at 152 last season, will move to 160, while Zach Stansberry, who wrestled J.V. last year, will be bumped to 171. Senior Camren Harris, who split time with J.V. and varsity last year, will be the go-to-guy at 189.
The front end of the Pirates’ lineup looks a little different this season with freshman and sophomores manning the lower weights. The middle portion will have a good majority of experienced wrestlers, including Shank (119), Brenton Martinez (135), Dylan Markley (145) and Kris Nieto (152).
“I would say for the most part our lineup has about eight or nine guys with extensive experience,” Starbuck said. “We’ll have a blend of different guys this year, but hopefully by Christmas time everybody will have improved.”
The Pirates hit the road Saturday for a 12-team tournament in Hotchkiss. Starbuck noted that the tournament is a good chance to look at his wrestlers and have an idea of where their at and what they need to work on as the season progresses.
“The biggest thing I want to see out of this tournament is to get everybody doing things technically right and to continue to work on their conditioning.”
