Pilots arriving or departing from the Montrose Airport are legitimately concerned about the status of the landing and taxiway surfaces, as well as animals and birds. There are conditions that, no matter how expertly a pilot handles the aircraft, can cause very costly and flight threatening problems. The FAA studies these conditions, but like all governmental agencies, places the money where pressures, including political pressures, are the greatest. Sometimes decisions are made, and “set in concrete” before other conditions arise. This may be the case with the fence at the airport; however, if taxiway conditions present a more immediate danger to aircraft and occupants, the FAA should correct that problem first. An airplane, unlike a car, cannot traverse undulating or damaged surfaces without danger of severe consequences. Some aircraft are more vulnerable that others. Birds and animals are another matter. Once I was flying a DC-3 with Pratt and Whitney, R1830, 1,200 horse power engines, turning 11ft. 7in. steel propellers out of St Louis when I encountered geese and ducks over the Missouri River. A bird hit the windshield; others were sliced to feathers by the props, fortunately without damage. An occurrence like this raises awareness but birds are difficult to manage. Animals, either domestic or wild, must be kept clear of airport runways. Fencing is an accepted way to do this where history of animal movement justifies the costs. Montrose Regional Airport managers are realistically calling for immediate taxiway repairs. We have a fine facility, with an outstanding reputation throughout the industry and country.
