MONTROSE ” If the pieces fall into place, Montrose Community Stadium Inc. could be halfway to funding artificial turf for the local high school football field.

A grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) could make that happen.

But the stadium group’s fiscal agent, Montrose Community Foundation, must rely on the local recreation district to apply for that grant, which is available only to cities, counties, park and recreation districts and environmental education facilities.

So Thursday, the foundation asked the Montrose Recreation District for its cooperation. The district has agreed.

“There has been an outpouring of support to make the project a reality,” said Melanie Hall, executive director of the foundation. “Now we’d like to infuse some outside money into the project to give it a boost.”

Montrose Community Stadium Inc. has been making strides since it was resurrected in 2007. It already has expanded seating and built a new entrance and bathrooms at the Montrose High School stadium.

Now it wants to erect a concession stand, locker rooms, a new press box, a handicap ramp and a stairway to the back of the bleachers, as well as replacing the wooden bleachers and installing new lighting and artificial turf.

They went on to college and are doing very well. Hats off to the teachers who educated them . So do what ever you want your stadium fine with me BUT don't knock on my door when you want money for this project or other single minded projects I've done my time. "

" First of all its not astro turf its field turf, huge difference. Astro turf is like carpet yes field turf is pretty much grass without the head ache. Most of you saying its gonna have to be replaced in 10 years also not true. Look at the field in Stocker Stadium in Junction. They have 4 high school teams and 1 college teams play on there do th math and it comes out to about 30 games a year played on it and it still look brand new. I am all for the new FIELD TURF. "

" I am old school and I love grass. Facts are the maintenance of an artificial field is 25% of grass. Most applications of artificial turf pay for themselves in 5 years in reduced maintenance. It increase the usage by other activities and would quite destroying the baseball field that is being used for practise. "

" I think we are getting away from the article. The main point was stated in the very first comment....fiscal responsibility. Where can any money go, regardless of where it comes from, that will do the most good for the city and county of Montrose. The Recreation Department has some problems right now of their own and can use a great deal of help themselves. "

And montrose has great fotball talent out there, I have seen it I have coached those up and coming young men and they have great talent. So try to stay on topic when you comment... "

And know I want Montrose to recuit some good football talent. The youth of montrose have nothing to look forward to except a sad life. "

" Its nice to see all the renovations being done...its about time. Astro Turf....not needed. Also maybe they can budget air conditioning into that somehow...i know the most of the kids do not like being more less learning in those HOT STUFFY rooms when school first starts...kids do much better if they are comfortable..DO SOMETHING FOR THE KIDS SAKE. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE Oh and maybe in the future....the school will add more room...or build a whole new high school....its soo crowded. Towns growing....but nothin else grows with it.. "

" Im not sure about astroturf... I hated playing on it. It was always much hotter than regular grass fields and when you slide on it it cuts you up really bad. Plus thise black beads get everywhere. They get in your cleats and up your nose and your mouth. I would not like to see astroturf put down. We are somewhat known for our field. "

" I think the jury is still out on how long the new artificial field will last. I have heard 7 to 10 years, but cost of replacement is far less than initial costs. I am wondering what effect weather and altitiude have on them. They have indicated that they are safer than old astroturf and even a grass field because they provide a consistant playing surface. No part of the field gets torn up so less chance of injury. "

" An artificial turf however, would save money on mowing, watering, fertilizing, seeding, sodding, aerating, etc. "

Adam wrote on Feb 3, 2010 8:12 AM:

" Lets keep the usage of the football field correct... Lacross is not played at MHS, Soccer has there own field to the south of the football field, band and the drill team only uses the field during football season. Is Montrose High a school or a regional events center?? Lets face it, say what you want the need for artificial turf is football driven. The school district seems able to provide a very good field during the growing season. "

MountRose wrote on Feb 2, 2010 7:12 PM:

" The purpose of using artificial turf is so ALL other teams can use it. Right now the grass so worn after the football team is done with it, other teams like soccer, drill teams, lacrosse, marching band, etc can't use it. An artificial turf would allow Montrose to host numerous regional events and tournaments. The trend is towards a low maintenance field for the entire community - not just football. "

JP wrote on Feb 2, 2010 9:59 AM:

" I am not saying we need it...but synthetic turfs life span is between 25-30 years, not 7-10. At least do some research before you post...its nothing like old artificial turf, its not like carpet at all...it feels and plays just like grass. "

Canyonman wrote on Feb 1, 2010 9:00 AM:

" This is a terrible idea that leads to lots of costs after the fact. Turf sounds good, and in the short run it is, but over time it will be a big drain on the school districts already taxed budget. I know we have to water the grass, but at least it will grow back. This is a bad idea. "
